Sell your coat and buy a sword?

What did Jesus tell his disciples prior to his arrest? He said to them:
"When I sent you out with no purse or knapsack or sandals, you weren't short of anything, were you?"
They said: "Not a thing".
He said to them:
"But now, if you have a purse, take it along; and the same goes for a knapsack. And if you don't have a sword, sell your coat and buy one!" -Luke 22:35-36

Uh, this is no metaphorical sword he's speaking of people. He is really telling his disciples to get armed. (As I recall, Peter cut off an ear with his, so they must have listened to him.)
